Yu-Gi-Oh! Pre-Grading — 1st Edition, Holo Bleed, and the CGC vs PSA Question

Yu-Gi-Oh sits between Pokemon's PSA dominance and MTG's BGS depth. PSA leads US liquidity for vintage and chase cards; CGC has gained share over the last 18 months with a stricter centering rubric that rewards cards perfectly centered at print time. The decision matrix is more fragmented than the other two games.

Konami's early holo printing has shown holo-ink bleed beyond the artwork boundary on specific prints — most notably first-wave LOB, MRD, and SDY holos. This is a surface-axis defect (SUR class), not a centering issue. The HSV holo-detect pass identifies bleed regions and routes them to the surface rubric instead of the centering axis.

Print misalignment on Yu-Gi-Oh cards typically shows as unequal border thickness on adjacent sides. This is what PSA's centering axis penalizes — it's flagged on every scan with explicit left/right and top/bottom ratios.

Asian-English Yu-Gi-Oh prints command a premium in Western markets. They have slightly different factory centering tolerances at the print stage, but AuraGrade grades against PSA and CGC published standards — not against print-run averages — so the predicted tier is directly comparable across print regions.

Worlds promo prints, Limited Edition tournament prints, and ghost rares all flow through the same pipeline. The rubric reads condition; you apply the rarity premium.

CGC's market share in Yu-Gi-Oh has grown steadily. Their centering rubric is stricter than PSA's at the top end, which means cards strong on the centering axis often grade higher at CGC than at PSA. Cards with edge whitening or surface scratches usually grade similarly at both.

The report shows a PSA-equivalent composite as the headline and surfaces the centering axis prominently — if centering is 9.5+ on both axes, CGC is often the better submission target. PSA still wins on US liquidity for vintage Blue-Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician chase cards.
