Magic: The Gathering Pre-Grading — Built for Black Borders and Vintage Foils
AI pre-grading for MTG cards. Black-border edge whitening detection, pre-2018 foil curl flagging, and a deterministic rubric mapped to both PSA and BGS subgrades. The $0.99 sanity check before you ship a Reserved List card to a grader.
Why MTG grading is harder than Pokemon
MTG's black borders show edge whitening at a glance — PSA and BGS deduct heavily because the contrast makes any wear trivially visible to a grader under raking light. The upside: AuraGrade's edge axis (EDG-1..10) is sensitive to the white-pixel-density delta along the border perimeter, which is exactly the failure mode black borders amplify.
The downside: vintage MTG (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised) carries six-figure tail value. Foil-era cards from 2003-2018 have foil/cardstock thermal mismatches that cause curl, which costs cards a tier or two from BGS. Both failure modes need triage before you spend BGS's $20-30 and 1-3 month queue.
Black-border edge whitening — the tier-killer
Edge whitening is the most common MTG-specific deduction. On a yellow-bordered Pokemon card, the same wear is harder to see; on MTG's black border, even sub-millimeter whiting registers. The EDG axis in our rubric measures the white-pixel-density delta along the border perimeter at pixel-level resolution after rectification.
If the EDG axis returns 9.5+ on both front and back, the card is a real BGS candidate. If it returns under 8, the card almost certainly grades a 7-8 max regardless of how clean the corners and surface look.
Pre-2018 foil curl and surface defects
Old-style MTG foils curl due to the foil layer and cardstock expanding at different rates. Curl manifests as a tilt-axis anomaly during the solvePnP pass — we detect the geometry but cannot quantify severity from a single photo. The report flags suspected curl so you can either disclose it manually or reconsider submission.
Modern foils (2018+) and traditional foil reprints handle cleanly. The HSV-based holo detection used for Pokemon applies equally — foil reflectance is suppressed before the surface pass so sheen doesn't get counted as a scratch.
Vintage MTG (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised)
AuraGrade grades condition, not authenticity. For any vintage MTG card valued over $500, pre-grading is triage — it tells you whether the condition justifies a BGS submission, but a clean pre-grade does not substitute for third-party authentication. Counterfeits of Beta dual lands exist and require physical inspection.
That said: if your Alpha or Beta card pre-grades at 8+ with no flagged anomalies, the card is almost certainly worth the BGS fee. Black Label / Pristine 10 territory is unreachable from phone photos because gloss-level defects aren't visible in diffuse optics.
BGS vs PSA — which grader our prediction maps to
BGS publishes four subgrades (centering/corners/edges/ surface) on a 1-10 half-point scale. AuraGrade's four-axis output maps to that structure directly. PSA reports a single 1-10 composite. For an MTG card, the report shows both: the BGS subgrade cross-walk on the sidebar and the PSA-equivalent composite as the headline.
Vintage MTG submissions skew BGS; modern competitive formats and high-foil Reserved List items also lean BGS for the subgrade transparency. PSA still wins on liquidity for cards under $200 because PSA-graded inventory has deeper buyer demand at the lower end.
Common questions
- Is MTG card grading worth it?
- For Modern cards under $50 the math rarely works. For Reserved List, Beta/Alpha duals, and high-end foils, grading regularly multiplies value. Pre-grade with AuraGrade first to confirm the card has a real shot at a 9+.
- Does AuraGrade handle MTG black borders?
- Yes — LAB-chroma centering math is border-color agnostic. Black borders actually make edge whitening more visible to the rubric, which often catches issues collectors miss under indoor lighting.
- Can AuraGrade detect foil curling on pre-2018 MTG cards?
- Foil curl shows up as a tilt-axis anomaly during solvePnP correction. AuraGrade flags it but cannot grade severity from a single photo — for severely curled foils, you'll need to disclose it manually.
- Should I grade a Beta dual land with AuraGrade first?
- Use AuraGrade as triage. For any card you believe is worth $500+, a physical BGS or PSA grade is essential — pre-grading does not substitute for in-hand professional inspection on vintage value.
- Does AuraGrade target BGS or PSA for MTG?
- Our four-axis scoring structure (CTR/COR/EDG/SUR) maps cleanly to BGS's published subgrade format. The composite estimate is calibrated against PSA's 1-10 ladder, with BGS-equivalent overlay on the report.
